One balmy Friday night in August, as growling stomachs and restaurant wait time proliferated, it was time to make a final decision on where to indulge for an impromptu, celebration-filled date night. Sway? Qui? While these new additions to the Austin restaurant scene have piqued my interest for some time, a no-reservations type of establishment was out of the question on this particular evening. You see, my fiancé and I both suffer from a unique variety of split-personality disorder in which we descend into cataclysmic downward spirals saturated with cantankerous asides and unfortunate mood swings. Strangely enough, this disorder only manifests when hunger strikes (so… 13 times a day if you are a normal human). Sometimes we can deal with that in one another, but we generally try to avoid the situation altogether. But on to more important matters…Other restaurant criteria we had: guaranteed mind-blowing food, impeccable service, and romantic ambiance. Maybe that sounds like unrealistic criteria, but not for my favorite, established Austin restaurant, Wink.

Nestled in an unsuspecting corner off of Lamar and 10th Street, Wink (and Wink Wine Bar) is one of those restaurants that continues to surprise me. While Mark Paul and Stewart Scrugg’s Wink has thrived in Austin for over a decade, their market-inspired cuisine continually features dishes that are equally as fresh as they are innovative. However, one of my favorite things about Wink’s is its seasonal spin on classic items like the seared scallops and the foie gras. I have ordered the scallops a handful of times, and honestly, there are no words. Whether the accompaniment is a divinely fresh cucumber-tomato couscous salad with herbed goat yogurt (the version I devoured on Friday) or some other delightful complement like green peas, avocado coulis, & jalapeño aioli, they are always so. insanely. mind-blowing.  In fact, for years, I claimed that the scallops at Wink were my all-time favorite dish in Austin. I still boldly stand by that claim. But now, I am adding to it. The foie gras. OH the foie gras. Prepared (this time) with pumpernickle, blackberries, a guinea egg, almonds, and a balsamic port reduction, this is the most ambrosial, decadent, yet balanced combination of flavors known to man. And if you get it with the wine pairing? Gone. I would go into more detail about this, but I’m certain it would be R-rated. Even if you aren’t an “adventurous eater,” order the freaking foie gras. And if you don’t, well, I’ll be really mad at you. But then I’ll get over it due to the mere fact that you dined at Wink, and no matter what you order, you won’t be disappointed.

While the food is pricey, it is worth every last penny, because what you are paying for is more of an overall experience, not just food. With that said, I would recommend the 5 course chef’s tasting menu ($68) with wine pairings (add $32) to get the full-monty experience of Wink, which, if I haven’t elucidated by now, is not one to be missed. Additionally, the service is impeccable, thanks to the knowledgable, yet down-to-earth wait staff and chefs as well as an unimaginable attention to detail. And the environment accents Wink’s very philosophy: fresh, unpretentious, and sophisticated all tied into one beautiful restaurant and Wine Bar. I gave Wink 4 green tomatoes, my first all green tomato ranking, because it is truly my favorite place in Austin to indulge in a meal/experience that is consistently out-of-this-world AND to be waited upon like a queen. ¡Buen provecho!
