The mere idea of “shrimp ‘n grits” engenders a contented sensation that radiates warmth all the way to my core; doesn’t it for you? Whether you’re making a hearty, low-country version of shrimp ‘n grits or a spicier, richer Creole version, with this recipe you simply can’t go wrong….
Remember way back when my Breakfast Taco was on Buzzfeed ? That was a fun, hot second of foodie fame. Now enter…The Avocado Toast….
I don’t know about you, but a little part of me is relieved that the last sugar-centric holiday (for a while) has come and gone. Love you Christmas, love you Valentine’s Day, but I’m ready to truly reset and be kind to my body with what I put into it. While I am not a fan of the detox-retox cycle (aka being “bad” then being “good”) as it is incredibly guilt-inducing, I think it’s always an opportune time to include more healthy recipes to your menu rotation. That way, we eliminate the guesswork from the eternal question “what’s for dinner?” and minimize the chances of making unhealthy choices. …
Feliz February, friends! With Valentine’s day right around the corner, I thought I would share a super simple dessert that is as healthy as it is nutritious (well, sans the ice cream..but really, who’s guna leave that out?). These dark chocolate balsamic roasted pears truly hit all corners of the palate. The rich, tangy dark chocolate balsamic vinegar* infuses the fruit with a sumptuous depth of flavor. When spooned over your favorite ice cream (I am a sucker for Lick’s Caramel Salt Lick flavor) and topped with salty pepitas, this dessert is some serious melt-in-your mouth perfection. You won’t even miss all the fat and calories. Enjoy!…
Happy new year, foodie friends! I hope you’re feeling rejuvenated and ready for all that 2015 holds. While I believe it’s important to consciously maintain a healthy lifestyle (spiritual, physical, emotional, relational) throughout the entire year, the start of a new year is an ideal oppurtunity to refocus on what fills you and eliminate what drains you. …
Happy almost 2015! I hope you find yourself exactly where you’d like to be as you ring in the brand new year. For me, that’s at home with my husband, having a “fancy night in” with aromatic cioppino (seafood stew) simmering away on the stove, snuggling up to old movies with a glass of bubbly in hand, and warmly reminiscing upon memories of the past year. As 2014 comes to a close, I’d like to leave you with a recipe for one of my favorite appetizers, Gochujang-glazed meatballs. Gochujang is a savory Korean condiment composed primarily of red chiles. Its smokey, umami flavor is so addicting that I’m sure it won’t be the last time you use it. Get creative with it! What do you have to loose?…
Merry Christmas to you and yours! I hope your holiday is full of love, laughter, great food and fellowship, and celebrating the reason for the season. Jesus Christ is born! Buen provecho, y’all!…
I simply can’t believe the holiday season is already upon us. The twinkle lights are strung, the Christmas shopping is well under way (or, if you’re like me, then it’s really just begun), and children are delightedly cutting out snowflakes (my classroom looks like an enchanted paper snowstorm just blew through), decorating gingerbread houses, and carefully formulating their letters to Santa. As Charles Dickens put it, “It is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself.”…
There is something about the Mexican culture that simply warms you from the inside out. Their passion, resilience, festive spirit, and genuine calidez are traits that are indisputably unique to the Mexican people, and have been the subject of my cultural envy (and subsequent adoption) for several years now. Of course, I take great pride in my own culture, which is a combination of German, Native American, and Welsh (and I’m probably leaving a few out). However, my closest relative that most recently immigrated to the US was my great grandfather who traveled aboard the George Washington steam liner from Germany to Ellis Island in 1921. Apart from my German roots, I have the tendency to feel devoid of a (or perhaps just far removed from) true culture.
