After much contemplation over whether or not to include restaurant reviews as a part of Gouramanda, I have decided to go for it! I will now feature restaurant and food truck reviews under a new section called “Taste the Town” starting with (but not limiting myself to) Austin! I couldn’t be more excited about this. Now I’ve even more reason (like I didn’t have enough already?) to venture out and taste my way through the culinary magic that world-renowned (and up-and-coming) chefs perform here on the reg.

While I will continue posting my own healthy recipes, (seeing as I cook much more often than I dine out) there will now be a little corner of my site dedicated to my opinions and impressions of restaurants I try for the first time or for the 100th time.
Disclaimer: For the sake of the maintaining the blog’s cohesiveness and to avoid those painfully pathetic iPhone food photos with the flash, minimal photography will be used for dining out reviews. (Sorry, I just can’t reason lugging my DSLR out with me on date night!) But back to the reviewing…

My criteria is based upon 4 crucial components to the overall experience:
- Food
- Ambiance
- Service
- Price
I will then rate each component using my “tomato” scale and will explain my reasoning (though a bit more succinctly than I explain my own food/stories.)
So, without further ado…here’s my first review! Ok one photo…
Komé Sushi Kitchen
Meal: Dinner (I have heard lunch is great also!)
Type of food: Japanese Comfort Food/Sushi
Who to bring: Date Night, Small Parties
Food: Ambiance:
Service:
Price:
I thought I would start on a high note by reviewing Komé Sushi Kitchen. Komé (previously a food truck called Sushi-A-Go-Go) was actually the final impetus behind adding a restaurant review section to my blog. Every time I sadly bid farewell to Komé, I find myself raving about it all the way home.
Overall, I would say this is my favorite place to enjoy authentic, reasonably priced sushi (and other Japanese fare) in Austin to date. The chasm between really crappy, inexpensive sushi and exorbitantly priced (yet delicious!) sushi baffles me, and this is the only restaurant I’ve found that touts the absolute best of both worlds. Housed in a small (hence the ambiance rating) yet cozy bungalow near Airport Blvd and 51st Street, this gem of a restaurant should immediately be moved to the top of your “dining out” list. Even if you don’t resonate with “adventurous” cuisine…you will fancy Komé. And the wait staff will help you all along the way.
So, what to order?
Sake: Ichinokura sake tari—hints of pepper, cedar undertones, full-bodied….it’s the way to go (or an Ichiban beer)
Starter: Their edamame is good (not great) but the seaweed salad is super fresh, tangy, and crisp
Sushi: We always order the Tarantula Roll. It’s a huge bite of soft-shell crab heaven, I tell you. I also highly recommend the Surf n Turf Roll (pictured above…steak in my sushi? yes please!), the Alone Together Roll (yellowtail, salmon, tuna, BBQ eel), and the Summer Time Roll (spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, avocado, and go-go sauce)
Other bites: Best freakin’ gyoza (potstickers) you’ve ever tried, Tori-teba Nagoya-style (caramelized soy chicken wings), vegetable tempura, and Ika-Yaki (grilled squid–sweet, sour, spicy, salty….hits all the bases)
Now go try Komé! ¡Buen provecho!
Thanks for the informative review! We love sushi and will add it to our “need to try” list of restaurants. And congrats for being quoted on Eater Austin!!
Yeah! Can’t wait to try Kome’. Thanks, Amanda, for adding this section to your blog.
